METAMORPHIC LANDSCAPES
The landscape is alive and fluid, in a constant state of change. Ultimately everything that we see and experience is transitory, and interconnected. These photographs explore the metamorphic and impermanent nature of the landscape by exploring the relationships between stillness and motion, between night and day, and between earth, fire, water, and air.
These hand-held exposures often take as long as two to four is utilized much like a motion picture camera, except that the ever-changing image is layered onto a single frame of film over time.
Most of these photographs were made either by moonlight or when the sun was at or below the horizon. The level of light at the time of exposure is often too low for the eye to perceive any color. It is not until the work begins in the darkroom that these unseen colors of the night become visible.
The photographs were made by traditional means with traditional materials. There is no digital work involved. The prints are handmade by the artist, in sizes of 18x27” and 30x45”. They are chromogenic prints, made on Fuji Crystal Archive paper.
