Suzanne Ciani on Ilse Bing's Life and Work

Saturday, December 5th

German-born photographer Ilse Bing was
celebrated as the Queen of the Leica in Paris in the 1930s, as she pioneered the use of the then new 35mm camera and played a key role in the history of avant-garde photography. Bing eventually relocated to New York where she remained creatively  engaged for the remainder of her life—writing poetry and creating collages and drawings inspired by her early studies in mathematics.

In New York, Bing met composer and Grammy nominee Suzanne Ciani, a kindred spirit celebrated for her innovations in electronic music. The museum’s current exhibition of Bing’s photographs is primarily drawn from Ciani’s private collection. For this gallery talk, Bolinas resident Suzanne Ciani will discuss Bing’s career and share personal stories of Ilse as both friend and inspiring mentor.
